It's been all the rage in Europe and Asia, but just won't catch on in the US. Now the EMV system (which stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa) is getting another shot on the American market.
Instead of using a magnetic strip, the card works with an integrated circuit. EMV is supposed to be a more secure than magnetic swipe cards because it employs cryptographic algorithms and user-specific PINs whenever the cardholder makes a transaction.
MasterCard announced today that it's making EMV cards to several US debit networks.
