Things I’ve learned since becoming a Chicagoan

Posted 5/22/2013 3:46:00 PM

As many people already know, I’m not originally from Chicago. I wasn’t born and raised here, but I chose to move here after getting out of the military because I’m a Midwest girl and I wanted to live in a big city. After having previously been to ‘The Windy City’ on a few occasions and always having a great time, I decided Chicago would be a great place to start my ‘civilian life’ (as we call it in the Marine Corps). Now, after living here for some time now, I’ve realized that I have not only made the right decision, but that I love this city!

I thought it would be fun to put together a list of things that I’ve learned about Chicago so far, and I only say ‘so far’ because there is so much to take in here and it’s a constant adventure. So without further ado… ...

How to Date a Loop Rock Girl

Posted 4/30/2013 2:49:00 PM

Finding the right girl (or guy) is never as easy task. In fact, I’ve learned that finding the right person usually comes when you least expect it. However, I listen to you, the fans of 97.9FM, and I hear a lot of, ‘man, I wish I could get a date with you’, so, here it is – your own list of how to date a Loop Rock Girl or someone very similar (i.e. The Ice Crew girls, The Lovables, or a model in general). It just so happens that I also know a few of the past Loop Rock Girls very well so I took what we all have in common and compiled it into a list.

And in no particular order…

  • CONFIDENCE (okay maybe I said in no particular order but this needs to be number one) Pretty girls get a lot of attention and you need to be ...

Calendar Signings and Blackhawks Viewing Party!

Posted 4/25/2013 5:57:00 PM

April showers are definitely hitting the Chicago area so keep those umbrellas close by. However, it’s starting to heat up and it looks like we have some highs in the 70’s to look forward to shortly! Time to get out of your houses, apartments, garages, and man caves and get to a Loop event as soon as humanly possible!

This Friday, the 26th, I’ll be at Tilted Kilt in Oakbrook, IL signing my new Labatt Blue poster calendars from 6:30pm-8:30pm. I love this poster because it’s all about beer and hockey and the Chicago area definitely has a passion for both. This event also gives you a great excuse to come enjoy some great food, fun atmosphere, and hot girls in teeny, tiny kilts! If that doesn’t sound like heaven, I don’t know what does!

Lucky for you that’s just Friday! We still have Saturday to look forward to and ...

My Top 10 Favorite Classic Rock Songs

Posted 4/9/2013 4:06:00 PM

Before reading through my list, realize that it literally took me hours to narrow this down to just ten songs. You try doing it! There are so many amazing classic rock songs out there that I literally made a list of about 40 songs and finally got it down to ten. Don’t get mad if you see that your all-time favorite song isn’t in my top ten. You can always comment on the bottom of this blog or feel free to tweet me @thelooprockgirl and we can have a nice, friendly debate. :) So without further adieu:

  1. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – American Girl.
There’s a reason why I used this song as the background music to the video I submitted when I first entered the Loop Rock Girl contest. This song is very relatable for me and I could listen to it over and over and over and ...

Baseball Season Is Here!

Posted 3/28/2013 2:37:00 PM

That’s right, it’s time to put on your ball caps, your favorite players jersey, and head to the baseball fields! I know what you’re thinking, you’re thinking ‘Shannon, who’s your favorite team? You simply cannot like both the White Sox and Cubs! It’s impossible, you must pick one!’ and to that I respond, ‘You know what I like more than both of those teams? I like beer, friends, and the game of baseball itself so get used to it – I go to both and I own a jersey for BOTH!’ (so there!) Now that we got that out of the way… ;)

The White Sox have their game day opener April 1st. Zakk and I will be at Cork & Kerry at the Park (3258 S. Princeton Ave) from 9am-1pm talking live on the radio, throwing some Budweiser’s back, playing games with whoever is up for playing with us, ...

My favorite spots in Chicago

Posted 3/19/2013 12:07:00 PM

Just recently I had some family and friends come visit me. Now, as a proud Chicagoan I thought it would only be suiting to show them why Chicago is the best city in the U.S. So, where do you take someone who’s never been to Chicago? Well, I’ve decided to put a short list together of a few of my favorite places in Chicago and why I think you need to check them out if you haven’t already. (And no, I’m not getting any special perks by naming any of these places, they are just my personal preferences, however, if you do work for one of these places and want to hook a sister up, feel free!)

  • Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria – Chicago= Pizza in many people’s eyes, so make sure if you have someone visiting show them that all the hype is true! This is the first place I ordered ...

20 Things You Didn't Know About Me Until Now

Posted 2/27/2013 4:45:00 PM
  1. I’ve been hunting for deer, bear, and grouse.
  2. I’m a fish – I grew up in northern Minnesota, land of 10,000 lakes, and I could never live anywhere that wasn’t close to a large body of water. I love swimming, fishing, tubing, knee-boarding, sun-bathing on a boat, and ice fishing.
  3. I was a 3-time expert on the rifle range while I was in the Marine Corps. I’m a killer when you hand me an M16 A2 Service Rifle.
  4. There were points in my life when I thought I wanted to be in the WNBA, the President, a history professor, a massage therapist, and a Drill Instructor (and in that order).
  5. I placed 8th in the state of Minnesota when I was in 8th grade on my high school speech team. The speech that I did was in a New York accent that I did with my older cousin who was ...

Chicago Auto Show Recap/Circle Track Expo

Posted 2/21/2013 4:54:00 PM

What a show! This was my first time at the Chicago Auto Show and it was so awesome to be a part of it this year, especially as the Loop Rock Girl and alongside The Loop’s Stock Car! Traffic and parking may have been an obstacle, but well worth it because the turnout at McCormick Place was incredible! I got to meet so many rockin’ people, from little boys that were afraid to walk up and talk to me (and rightly so, especially when I’m in an all-black spandex jumpsuit) to elderly women wanting to take pictures with me to make their grandson’s jealous! Thanks to all the wild fans, I now have an album on my phone full of awesome people that I met during the show and I even got to sign four people’s stomachs… don’t ask why, they just asked, so I did. Being a part of ...

Chicago Loves Their Sports

Posted 1/29/2013 2:47:00 PM

Here in Chicago we love our sports and right now we are definitely getting our fill for all kinds of sports fans! This weekend The Loop hooked me up with a press pass to go to the UFC fights at the United Center. As some of you may know, I’m a diehard mixed martial arts fan so this was a real treat for me! I was even able to go behind the scenes and meet some of the fighters as well as snap a couple of pictures. I died and went to MMA heaven Saturday night!

All you hockey fans should be going crazy right now too! The Blackhawks are on a roll! They remain undefeated and just took their streak to 6-0! The next victims for them are the Minnesota Wild. Now, I am originally from Minnesota but don’t get it twisted, I’m a Blackhawk fan through and through! ...
