Dave Grohl is one cool dude. He fronts one of the coolest rock bands around, all be the stupid name – Foo Fighters. He sits in as a drummer for other major artists, and he is a film director. His directorial debut is happening at Sundance later this month when they show “Sound City”. Now, that sounds like a pretty busy schedule so far, but we aren’t done yet. Dave has decided to make the debut a little more memorable and has put together one hell of a supergroup to play the films launch party.
The Sound City documentary is all about the world famous California recording studio of the same name. The list of platinum records that came out of that studio is amazing. Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Guns and Roses, Johnny Cash, and the artists keep coming.
What’s odd about this magical studio is, well, honestly, it was a dump. It had carpeting on the walls like its your dads old econovan. It’s located in an industrial park. From the outside Sound City looked like a place you store your old couch, not record a world class album. Yet, the world class albums came out of this place.. tons of them.
As the world advanced with technology, so did recording studios. Soon, bands were recording everything they did into computers, and the old analog warmth coming from the magic tube powered analog 8028 Neve console faded away into history. Well, Sound City’s famous 8028 Neve console didn’t exactly fade away; it was purchased by Mr. Grohl. Smart Move.
So, some of the legends of Sound City’s past are going to jump up on stage with Dave in honor of the documentary. Hearing this list of musicians, you would think it’s a rock and roll hall of fame show. I guess in a way, it is.
Here is who is in Dave Grohl’s new Sound City supergroup: Stevie Nicks, Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen, John Fogerty, former Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic, Rick Springfield, Rage Against the Machine's Brad Wilk, and his current Foo Fighter lineup.
The movie premiers January 18th at Sundance and will be available for purchase February 1st.
