The Great Ernest Borgnine Dead at 95
Posted 7/9/2012 8:00:00 AM

It may seem hard to believe, the man must have had some special Ozzy like DNA strand, however the great Ernest Borgnine has passed away at 95 years old.

Many old school movie buff's will certainly remember his roll in "From Here to Eternity" or "Marty". Watching McHale's Navy reruns after school was practically a religion to me here in Chicago.. However, my favorite roll for Ernest was as Cabbie in Escape from New York. LOL I don't know why. :) I just loved it. The man had range, skill, and an amazing work ethic.. making a movie almost every year since 1951. PLUS TV! crazy.

Now, I was lucky enough to have had Mr Borgnine on my radio shows several times over the years. He was always very cool, and damn funny too. Often, a cohost or producer would comment during our preshow meetings.. "Jesus, Ernest Bornine?! Is he still alive?" Yes, he was! God Bless him.. and probably making another movie or tv show.

There's a great story about an interview with him for a tv news station and the anchor asked him what his secret was for longevity.. he snickered and said "I don't dare tell you". Then as the camera started to fade off, he leaned over and whispered into the anchors ear.. "I masturbate a lot". His lapel microphone caught the super low audio. F'n classic.

Mr. Borgnine was a WWII veteran. A Navy man who served on the destroyer Lamberton. We are sure loosing these warriors at an alarming rate.

But 95 years is a hell of a good run. Nobody is going to argue that point.. and he certainly lived it to the fullest. Still, I'm going to miss knowing he was alive. I know it sounds weird, but I can't tell you how many times that subject has come over the years.. and he was always still going.. still working.. still cracking jokes STILL ALIVE! A fucking TITAN!

He had gone in for a routine check up on Tuesday. His publicist told the Times that it turned out to be a lot more serious than they thought. Then today, at 1:30 pm, surrounded by family and friends, he passed away. The official cause was listed as renal failure - the sudden and acute failure of the kidneys. Fuck.

and so the Titan was gone.
The Juggernaut man, the indestructible Ernest Borgnine.
A life well lived. One hell of a ride. I hope we are all so lucky.
