You Can Never Have Too Many Guitars

I think my father understood from the start, since he was the one that walked in the house with not one, but two new acoustic guitars for me. It was the beginning of a beautiful obsession – Guitars. Over the years I have had girlfriends, and x-wives, ask “Why do you need so many guitars, you can only play one at a time?” Listen carefully and let me make this perfectly clear, you can never have too many guitars.
I did not have three thousand pairs of shoes; I had one thousand and sixty. - Imelda Marcos
I’m not sure why, but it almost always seems to be women. Some women simply can not understand why we want more guitars. I say SOME women, because I have certainly run into some very cool women who totally understand our obsessive desire to increase the herd of guitars. You would think more women could grasp this idea; it’s no different than them picking up another pair of high heeled shoes, or yet another cute handbag. God bless the girl who supports the practicing guitarist, they are a rare and patient breed.
Every guitar I own gets used and has its purpose. -Mark Knopfler
No two guitars will ever sound and play exactly alike. They are like brushes to a painter, each with its own style and result, its own purpose and place. Some you might use most of the time, while other guitars have a very specific purpose and are used much less often. I sit and practice on my Taylor acoustic almost every day, but my 7-string Ibanez acoustic rarely sees the light of day. Ah, but when it does, what a glorious thing. Like a Boy Scout, one must always be prepared. I mean, who knows when you might need a 7-string acoustic guitar, or an 8-string electric, or a 3-pickup Custom Gibson Les Paul?
Fortune favors the prepared mind. - Louis Pasteur
Look, you can tell the wife it’s just a tool and you need to be prepared for anything. You can tell your accountant it’s a much needed equipment write off. Nice. Tell them anything you need to justify it in their minds, however you don’t need to sell me on it, I’ve got 13 beautiful top of the line guitars in my collection and it grows every year.
If you need to ask why, you wouldn’t understand. – Every Harley Davidson Rider Ever
Last week I picked up a sweet Gretsch Honey Dipper resonator guitar. Old School man. She’s a pure blues and slide guitar monster, built like a tank, aluminum body with a totally unique sound that I just had to have. Do I play a lot of slide guitar? Nope. But I plan on playing more now. Did that even come into consideration? Nope.
Besides being a guitar player, I'm a big fan of the guitar. I love that damn instrument. - Steve Vai
A good friend of mine, guitarist of course, married to a wonderful and beautiful woman, has one of the largest vintage guitar collections I have ever seen. He would pull a new one from the wall for every practice. They were all sweet. I envied ever one of those guitars.
I asked him once “How do you get to keep building this collection. Doesn’t your wife freak out over the cost?”
His words of wisdom are worth noting. He replied “Well, I have so many guitars and amps these days, she has no idea what’s new and what’s old. Sometimes she asks if something is new, and I always reply.. no… that old thing.. I’ve had it for years. Then she moves on without giving it another thought. At this point, I don’t think she has any idea how many guitars I own.” Brilliant. Hiding your trees in the forest. Outstanding.
Most people seek after what they do not possess and are enslaved by the very things they want to acquire. - Anwar Sadat
My truck needs new paint. I bought a new guitar instead. My house needs a new fence. I bought a new guitar amp. Glorious guitars, I love them. They are displayed on every wall in my small shack of a house. For real. You can find one sitting in a stand in almost every corner. I have a room, just for all of their cases.
Hi, I’m Patrick Capone, and I’m a guitar addict.
Some people are hooked on drugs, alcohol, some to watching sports, some to working out, some people can’t stop watching soap operas, it’s cool, and we all have our vices. To me, I love to make music, and the guitar is my tool of choice. I want them all, every kind, every shape, every variation, vintage ones, new ones, odd ones, boring ones, broken ones, custom ones.
It’s simple, you can give me a designer tie for my birthday and I’ll wear it to somebody’s graduation.. once.. maybe. Give me a new guitar and I’ll make music on it for the rest of my life. Which do you think pays off better for everyone involved?
Do you know a guitarist? Wondering what to get him for a gift? Perhaps, Fathers Day? Birthday? Get him a guitar. It doesn’t matter that you don’t know which one. Pick one out you like. He’ll love it. I promise. Plus, gifted guitars have a magic to them. It’s true. And if for even a minute you find yourself thinking that he already has a guitar, well, just remember this..
You can never have too many guitars!
