Remembering John Lennon, Who Would Have Turned 72 Tuesday

Attendees can bring candle and flowers to lay around the marker, and also are encouraged to sing Beatles and Lennon solo songs, recite poems and share their thoughts and recollections of the rock star.

Meanwhile, Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, will be in Reyjavik, Iceland, on Tuesday for the annual lighting of the Imagine Peace Tower.  The memorial -- a white stone monument that projects a strong light beam into the sky -- was unveiled on October 9, 2007 -- and is lit on the same day each year as well as on select other dates.  Ono also will be presenting the LennonOno Grants for Peace, which are handed out every other year, to five activists and/or artists.  Among the 2012 honorees are pop superstar Lady Gaga and the jailed all-female Russian punk group Pussy Riot.

Lennon, of course, was shot to death in December 1980 by a deranged fan.  He was 40 years old.
