11/17/2012

Armando Gallo/UMeCondolences to Peter Gabriel, who revealed that his father, Ralph Parton Gabriel, passed away on Friday, November 9.  He was 100.  In a message on his official website, Peter says, "I will miss him enormously."  He also posted a video of a recent song he wrote in tribute to his dad titled "Father, Son."

The clip, which was directed by Peter's daughter Anna, features recent footage of Gabriel and his father walking side by side, embracing and doing stretching exercises together.  The video also includes scenes of Peter with his own young son, Luc, who turned four in July.

According to a 1986 Spin magazine article about Gabriel, his father was a technician who worked in research and development, and designed the first fiber-optic cable television system, Dial-A-Program.  Gabriel says that, sadly, nothing ever came of his dad's work, because, as he told Spin, "The potential of cable TV was hardly recognized at the time."
