Doors Guitarist Robby Krieger's Jazz Group Kicks Off Tour; Krieger Shares Other Musical Plans

RobbyKriegersJazzKitchen.comDoors guitarist Robby Krieger kicks off a brief tour with his Robby Krieger's Jazz Kitchen side project on Wednesday in Montreal.  The trek will see the group visit a handful of cities in northeastern U.S., and will wrap up with a two-night stand on December 14 and 15 at New York City's famed jazz club The Iridium.

Krieger's Jazz Kitchen features the same group of players with whom the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer recorded his Grammy-nominated 2010 solo album, Singularity.  Among them are three musicians who performed and recorded with the late Frank Zappa -- bassist Arthur Barrow, keyboardist Tommy Mars and drummer Chad Wackerman.

Speaking recently with ABC News Radio, Krieger spoke very highly about his Jazz Kitchen collaborators, describing them as "amazing" and "world class musicians."

Meanwhile, Krieger shared a little update about the track he and Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek recorded earlier this year with Missouri rapper Tech N9ne [pr: nine], which came on the heels of their 2011 collaboration with electronica star Skrillex.

"It's a version of [The Doors'] 'Strange Days,'" explained the guitarist.  "Look for that to be coming out.  I haven't heard it yet, so I'm patiently waiting."

He added that he and Ray have "been talking to a couple of other DJ type guys, too.  So, hopefully, there'll be more of that coming."

Yet another potential collaboration for Krieger and Manzarek is one they've been trying to arrange with Carlos Santana, who often has expressed his strong admiration of The Doors.  Robby reveals that when he and Ray talked with the guitar legend about working together, Carlos said, "'I'll call you in a month or so and we'll get this going.'  That was about a year ago."

Krieger adds, "I'm still waiting for Carlos to get back.  Hopefully, we can do something.  That'd be great.  I love his playing.  I always thought if there was anybody that kind of sounded the same, it was me and him."

Lastly, Robby talked about the possibility of him recording a new rock project music with Manzarek, with whom he continues to play Doors music in concert all over the world.

"I think we're kind of waiting for [Doors drummer] John [Densmore] to get on board before we do that," he said, admits.  "That would be nice."  Manzarek and Krieger, of course, have had a strained relationship with Densmore for many years.
