Photo: Phillip V. CarusoOfficial details have been revealed about the upcoming HBO film starring Al Pacino that takes a fictional look at events surrounding the murder trial of eccentric music producer Phil Spector, who in was convicted of the 2003 shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson. 

The movie, titled simply Phil Spector, was written and directed by acclaimed playwright David Mamet and is scheduled to premiere on March 24 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.  Academy Award winner Helen Mirren will be featured as Spector's attorney Linda Kenney Baden.  A still from the flick has been released showing Pacino as Spector wearing one of the outlandish wigs he sported during the trial.

As Mamet explains in a statement, the film isn't "'based on a true story.'  It is a drama inspired by actual persons in a trial, but it is neither an attempt to depict the actual persons, nor to comment upon the trial or its outcome."

Spector, who had long history of erratic behavior, as well as a reported obsession with guns, was sentenced to 19 years to life for killing Clarkson at his mansion in Alhambra, California.  He has always insisted that he was innocent and claims Clarkson committed suicide.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mamet noted at a Los Angeles press event this past Friday that he came to the project with preconceptions about 73-year-old producer that changed after he viewed the a 2009 documentary titled The Agony and Ecstasy of Phil Spector.

"[I initially thought that] I know all I need to know [about Spector], which is that he was a freak, he killed some girl, he went away.  Good riddance," the writer explained.  "At the end of the documentary, you're saying, 'Wait a second.  I came to this with such prejudice.  Maybe the guy's not guilty.'"

Spector, of course, is known for originating the so-called "Wall of Sound" production technique that was used by many 1960s rock and pop legends.  Among the artists with whom he's worked over the years include The Ronettes, Ike and Tina Turner, The Beatles, John Lennon and The Ramones.
