Eagles Doc Premieres Tonight at Sundance Festival; Director Opens Up About Film & Its Sequel

1/19/2013

History of the Eagles, Part OneThe new documentary History of the Eagles, Part One gets its premiere at 9:30 p.m. MT tonight at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.  All four members of the band -- Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit -- will be in attendance at the big event, and also will take part in a special pre-screening function that will include a preview of the movie.

The film's director, Alison Ellwood, shared some new information about the documentary, as well as its already-completed sequel, with Billboard.

Ellwood explains that History of the Eagles, Part One covers "from when the band began 'til its breakup," while the second flick "picks up with the solo careers and the band reuniting in 1994."  She adds that Walsh is featured prominently in Part Two, noting that his story is "almost the crux of the film."

While some of the Eagles members had contentious relationships that may have factored into the band's breakup in 1980, Ellwood maintains that "nobody comes off as a villain" in Part One.  She adds, "The antagonisms that occurred -- all the members talk about it.  It was this thing that imploded on itself."

The director also reveals that the material that became the second part of the documentary initially was going to be included on a bonus DVD for the History of the Eagles, Part One package, but says that the band members "gave such great interviews, we created a second film."  She explains that she considers Part Two to be sometimes "more moving than the first film" because "the emotional arc is when they grow up.  [In Part One] you leave them at the height of their success in meltdown mode and in film two they grow and bring themselves back together."

Ellwood reports that both History of the Eagles movies eventually will be released together as a two-DVD package.
