The spot where Mick Jagger and Keith Richards formally met in London is now an historic site.
A blue heritage plaque has been installed at Dartford Station, reading “Mick Jagger and Keith Richards met on platform 2 on 17 October 1961 and went on to form the Rolling Stones — one of the most successful bands of all time.”
Although both attended the same school, they had never spoken until this particular day when Jagger was heading to the London School of Economics while carrying some of his favorite blues records and Richards was on his way to Sidcup Art College with his guitar. The pair struck up a conversation which led to Keith being invited to play in Mick’s garage band.
Darford Borough Council Leader Jeremy Kite said in a statement that “Platform 2 has a small but important role in pop music history. I hope that in the years ahead many thousands of rail passengers will enjoy looking at the plaque and realizing the part the station played in bringing the Rolling Stones together.”
