It was definitely a foregone conclusion that David Bowie and Dave Grohl would collaborate in some musical fashion, and by all accounts it was a great working relationship. However, some things weren’t always jiving. Grohl tells Playboy magazine about the time he was working on a film soundtrack, and wanted Bowie’s vocals on one of the songs, “About two years ago, I got approached by this movie to do a song for the movie, so I thought, ‘Maybe I’ll have someone else sing, I’ll do the music and then have another vocalist. And then I thought, ‘Maybe I’ll ask and see if David would want to do it.’ So the next day I get an e-mail and it says, ‘David, I watched the movie and I got to be honest, it’s not my thing.’ ‘I’m not made for these times.’” Bowie respectfully declining is not the funny part, however. After a few more back and forth emails, Bowie closed the door with, “All right, now that’s settled, then f*ck off.” Since his passing, similar stories of rejection have been noted from Coldplay and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It’s Bowie being Bowie, and we are sure Grohl considers the rejection a badge of courage.
