Led Zeppelin ‘Led Zeppelin’ (12 Days of Led Zeppelin)

Now that the 12 Days of Led Zeppelin have started on the Loop, I thought I’d write something daily about each album we’re giving away.

Led Zeppelin powered through the recording of their first album; the sessions took less than two days total to finish. The main reason was financial: Jimmy Page was bankrolling the recording, so the band had to be super-efficient in the studio.

A few of the songs on the album (“Communication Breakdown,” “I Can’t Quit You Baby,” “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You, “How Many More Times”) got their start on the road before “Led Zeppelin” was an official thing. After the Yardbirds broke up, Jimmy Page hooked up with Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham to form the “New Yardbirds.” They played a handful of Scandinavian tour dates to honor existing Yardbirds contracts, then hit the studio shortly thereafter… as Led Zeppelin.
